How to Follow A YarnArts Pattern

Dear Crocheter,

Kathleen and I want to provide you with this instruction sheet to help you understand our method of printing crochet pattern directions in our new format.

  1. Our patterns omit repitious directions, such as - "in next st", or "st", after the directions for each stitch. 
  2. If a group of stitches is repeated in succession, it will be set off in parenthesis (  ) with the number of times you repeat those stitches immediately following the parenthesis. 
  3. The commas always separate the stitches or series of stitches you will put in the next stitch.  When you come to a comma - you go to the next stitch of your piece and follow the next set of directions, stopping with the next comma -- and going on to the next un-worked stitch of your piece before following the next set of directions following the comma, ect. 
  4. Most of our patterns are worked in rounds (Rnds).  Do not turn or join at the end of a Rnd unless told to do so. 
  5. Example #1.  (The "old" style of printing pattern instructions)  Rnd 2:  sc in the first st, dc in the next 2 sts, sc in 2 sts, sc the next 2 sts tog, sc in 2 sts, sc the next 2 sts tog, dc in the next st.  (10 sts in the rnd.)

In our patterns the same directions would read this way : 

Rnd 2: sc, dc in 2, (sc in 2, sc 2 tog) 2 times, dc. [10] which is a listing of just the blue highlighted sts of the above example.

If you follow our instructions, you will find the example contains all the detailed directions required without the extra (frequently confusing) repetitive crochet jargon.  

Leaving out the extra crochet jargon has allowed us to devote more space for computer diagrams.  All of our new patterns will be in this format.  Many experienced crocheters tell us they like these concise directions.  We hope you will too.
